Supervision in a safe space

I offer clinical supervision to students in training and to qualified therapists from different theoretical orientations. My own orientation is psycho-dynamic, as I trained at the Human Relations Institute in Edinburgh as a psycho-analytic psychotherapist. However, I supervise students in the person centred/psycho dynamic dialogue framework used at Edinburgh University training where I work so I am interested in the different perspectives one can have on clinical work using different theoretical backgrounds and applications.

As in any supervisory process, we will need a bit of time to learn each other’s language and trust within our relationship. This may include how your personal material is held in the context of our clinical discussions or events such as shared countertransference and parallel processes we experience.

As supervisor, I hold different though overlapping responsibility for your work as a professional differentiated from that of a student. However, the basic approach including safety, trust and contractual agreement is the same for both student and qualified practitioner.
